Nedim Türfent is a Kurdish journalist and poet. After exposing how police tortured Kurdish workers with the words ‘You will see the power of the Turk!’ he received death threats from the police. He was arrested on May 12 2016 on unfounded charges of terrorism. His trial was deeply flawed – many witnesses said they had been tortured and were forced to testify against him. Türfent became an important case for the entire PEN network, who worked together for his freedom during the six years and seven months he spent in prison before his release on November 29 2022.

His first collection of poetry, Kuş Aynası (Bird's Mirror), was written in prison and published in Turkey in 2021. His poetry collection Über Mauern (Over Walls) was published in Germany in 2022. Nedim Türfent now works as a writer for an organisation in Germany.
